Alarms are activated in several ways including automatic heat detection, smoke detectors, and manual pull stations, or by individuals reporting in by phone or some other method.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance guidelines for St. Bonaventure require that to ensure the utmost safety in the event of fire or the sounding of a fire alarm, impacted buildings shall be evacuated. All campus buildings are equipped with portable fire extinguishers, and Safety and Security officers and fire department responders are trained in their use.

Proper procedures for using a fire extinguisher

It is important that you become familiar with how to use a fire extinguisher before attempting to use one. In addition, before using an extinguisher you should:

• call 911
• be sure that all others in the building have been alerted and that evacuation has begun
• have a clear escape route
• be sure that your extinguisher is appropriate for the type of fire you are fighting

Types of fires and appropriate extinguishers

• Class A extinguisher: for burning wood. paper, tires, etc.
• Class B: flammable liquids such as gasoline or petroleum oils
• Class C: electrical appliances
• Class D: flammable metals such as magnesium
• Class K: vegetable oils/cooking grease

To employ an extinguisher, think PASS

• P = Pull the pin from the extinguisher
• A = Aim the hose at the base of the fire from a distance of 8-10 feet
• S = Squeeze the handle
• S = Sweep back and forth with hose
